What is a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)?

A life cycle assessment (LCA) is a research method that allows you to determine exactly where and how a product, service, or process impacts the environment. This begins when the raw materials are first extracted and ends when your product has been recycled or your process or service has been completed. In other words, you assess the environmental impact of the entire life cycle. 

LCA is a valuable tool that can be applied across various sectors, including the creative industry. This methodology helps you identify so-called hotspots in the life cycle of your product, service, or process so that you can then take action to reduce your environmental impact. 

Why is an LCA important?

It probably won’t surprise you, but one of the reasons an LCA is important is that it helps identify the aforementioned hotspots. It allows you to pinpoint exactly where in the supply chain the greatest environmental impact occurs. This enables you to make better strategic decisions, mitigate risks, and use those insights to implement targeted optimizations.  

Another important aspect of LCAs relates to the increasingly stringent requirements imposed by government agencies and supply chain partners regarding corporate sustainability reporting and communication. LCAs make your organization’s story transparent, giving stakeholders and customers greater confidence and a concrete picture of your efforts and ambitions.

Get Started with Life Cycle Assessments on Your Own

An LCA doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does require the necessary knowledge, expertise, and tools. Below is a brief but comprehensive step-by-step guide:

  1.  Define the research question
    Ask yourself exactly what you want to achieve with the LCA. Do you primarily want to map the CO₂ emissions of a specific product or process, or are you looking for a broader perspective, such as on water and energy consumption? The outcome of this step determines what data you need and which focus areas you choose during the analysis.
  2. Collect data
    Start by gathering the data you already have on hand. This includes energy and water consumption, transportation distances, and material usage. If necessary, seek assistance from an expert. At the Service Center, we have extensive experience using the EcoInvent database and can perform complex calculations using our CO2 & Energy RI&E. Furthermore, we always have our LCA calculations externally verified by the SCCi, after which a certificate for that substrate is issued. You need the correct data to establish a solid foundation for the rest of your research.
  3. Impact Assessment and Optimization
    Using the data you’ve collected, you’ll begin to assess your environmental impact. This includes CO₂ emissions, energy consumption, and waste streams. Once you have the results of your analysis, you can move on to the optimization phase to implement concrete measures to reduce the negative impact. This can range from using more sustainable materials to improving energy efficiency in your production process.

  4. Reporting and Communication The results of your LCA are a powerful tool for supporting your sustainability goals, and you can easily integrate them with the CO2 & Energy RI&E. Store your LCA results securely in a reporting tool. This allows you to use facts and data to demonstrate the steps you are taking and the results you are achieving.

  5. Improvement and Innovation An LCA should not be a one-time exercise. If you truly want to excel in the area of sustainability, it is important to systematically assess the impact of your business operations, products, and processes—especially when changes occur within your company or supply chain.
